AMIS builds IoT platform for Eneco

Last September, we kicked off: the construction of an IoT platform for Eneco. This makes AMIS Conclusion an important link in a programme that contributes to the energy transition in the Netherlands and at the same time contributes to the company's sustainability goals. We do this by integrating modern IT and energy technology.

What about it? What are the challenges and what makes this project special? Read the interview with Frank Schutrops in the role of result manager and scrum master of the IoT Platform team within the program here.

AMIS works on sustainable energy transition in The Netherlands by integrating modern IT- and energy technology

"Technologically and organizationally, I think this is one of the most interesting projects so far."

District heating as a sustainable alternative to gas

"District heating has been around for a long time, but has not yet been equipped with modern technology on a large scale. More efficient control of the heat network can be achieved by providing the network with remotely readable sensors. Also, the meter readings of heat meters in a house often still have to be submitted manually. Through accurate measurement data, monitoring and better control, the heat network can be regulated more efficiently and the consumer always has up-to-date insight into his consumption.

And that is what we are working on: an IoT platform that makes the measurement data and meter readings from the heat network remotely readable and centrally transparent, of course with the customer's permission. After which it is made available to systems within the company for the delivery of other digital services. This allows us to extract valuable information from the data from the heat network."

"Smarter" heat network "

The program makes the network fit for the future. The programme consists of a number of sub-projects. We provide the IoT platform and work closely with the other teams in the program. For example, the team that builds hardware and software for reading heat meters. But also the team responsible for digitally supporting the technician during the installation and the data analysis team that focuses on more efficient control of the heat network itself, creating a so-called Smart Grid. “

Dot on the horizon

"A dot on the horizon is to integrate energy systems other than district heating with the IoT platform. We can then process this data in an up-to-date, unambiguous and integrated manner. For example, for the monitoring and control of boilers and central heating boilers. The insight that our client gains can then be used to better coordinate the various energy flows such as electricity, gas and heat. By developing models that are predictive of supply and demand, production, storage and transport can then be arranged more efficiently."

Growth model

"We started in September last year and put the IoT platform live before Christmas with the first meters. It was a tough job to get that done in a short period of time together with all parties involved.

We expect to grow to several thousand meters soon and after the summer we will scale up even further and we are also working on functionality in addition to processing measurement data to actively control the network."

Organizations work together with modern technology

"In close cooperation with the client, we develop, deliver and manage the IoT platform. AMIS focuses on the Microsoft Azure-based platform and on the integration of new so-called IoT edge devices. Together with Conclusion Mission Critical, we ensure a safe and reliable connection from the meter to the IoT platform."

An important choice is to work with modern cloud technology. We choose to work with standard components of Microsoft Azure where possible. This gives us a lot of advantages, especially in the scalability of the platform. Because Microsoft is continuously working on the further improvement of the Azure platform, we can focus on the core functionality and still benefit from the latest developments. Everything aimed at using energy more efficiently"

Sustainability connects

"This is not only a very nice socially relevant project from a technological and organizational point of view. It is also nice to be able to make an important contribution to achieving common sustainability goals as a technology partner of our client."
