More efficient cleaning and a better customer experience at an airport through the use of IoT

The airport strives for excellent facilities and therefore attaches great importance to a neat and tidy environment. To achieve this, a team of cleaners is active 24/7. They empty and inspect all trash cans at the airports according to fixed collection rounds. With the new opportunities that IoT offers in the form of 'smart trash cans', the demand arose to achieve better results with them. In collaboration with Undagrid, AMIS has developed an application that can make processes more efficient and improve the quality of the cleaning work.

High-quality

The airport is in the process of becoming one of the most sustainable and high-quality in the world. With an excellent airport infrastructure and facilities for passengers and cargo, the airport ensures the flourishing of international trade, tourism and knowledge exchange. A team of cleaners is always actively working to ensure that everything stays clean. Emptying the bins on time is an important task in this.

New possibilities

The emptying of the trash cans was always done via fixed collection rounds. There were also frequent inspection rounds to identify any damage and defects. Current technology makes it possible to tackle this in a smarter way. The fill level and defects of garbage cans can now be detected remotely. The cleaning company at the airport asked Undagrid and AMIS to apply this technique to make the cleaning process more efficient, with a better result for the traveler: no full and defective trash cans.

By combining fill level sensors with a route application, it is possible to empty only the bins that require it. Discovering defects also takes less effort as a result. This saves time on the role as an inspector and on the bins that are not yet full enough. A good step to further increase the high quality of the airport.

Collaborative project

The monitoring and routing service was realized in collaboration with Undagrid, supplier of the sensor platform. This platform measures the fill level and status of the bins using sensors optimized for robustness and long battery life. The fill level of each container is periodically sent to the platform. The data received is transferred to a dashboard and a mobile app with the cleaner's route.

"The collaboration with AMIS in this process helps Undagrid to focus on its core business. Building an industry-specific customer interface is something we prefer to outsource to a company like Conclusion." Marcus Breekweg - CDO at Undagrid

User-friendly and efficient

In this new system, data sources, user experience and control are optimally integrated. This makes it possible to set up the work processes 'fact-based'. Extra attention has been paid to the user interface. It is an ergonomic interface that is suitable for use on both desktop applications and mobile interfaces. This way, the cleaner, manager or planner can all use the same application during their work

The new system has different modes. First, there is a mode for the cleaners. This shows the route of the bins that are full and need to be emptied. There is also a mode for the operator who can set the routes and make corrections if necessary. Finally, there is a mode for the service engineer who takes care of the installation of the sensors and performs maintenance on the bins. The cleaners can see which bins on the route need to be emptied via a simple menu. They can also report a defect or damage on the application. These are scheduled directly in the service technician's route.

"Because the solution offered has a strong separation between the sensor platform and the user interface, it is possible to apply the same backend for a multitude of different customer solutions. That makes this platform extremely flexible and valuable."
Robbrecht van Amerongen - Head of IoT at AMIS Conclusion

New service

Thanks to the new application, the airport's cleaning company has undergone a business transformation. In the classic model, cleaning services were delivered by the hour and there was less visibility into the result. Now the results can be properly checked thanks to the 'fact-based' services. It is also clearer to the cleaners what the focus should be on so that they can fulfill their tasks in the best possible way.
