Zuyderland Medical Centre makescare more predictable

Faced with rising costs, staff shortages and increasing demand, hospitals are seeking ways to work more efficiently. Key priorities on the management agenda include reducing workload for staff, streamlining processes and making optimal use of limited capacity. Zuyderland Medical Centre is actively pursuing these goals, with a data platform and prediction platform proving their value.

By leveraging data and technology smartly, Zuyderland gains control over care processes. This enables more effective deployment of staff and avoids unnecessary costs—leading to a range of positive side effects.

Emergency Department (ED)

One of the biggest challenges lies in the Emergency Department (ED), which is inherently unpredictable and a key junction within the hospital. Patients arriving at the ED often flow through to other departments. This unpredictability leads to pressure on downstream departments, unnecessary patient transfers and reliance on temporary staff. That makes it especially relevant to improve forecasting at the ED: how many patients are expected, with what complaints, and what level of care will they require?

Data platform

To address this challenge, Zuyderland set out to improve its internal information infrastructure. Accurate forecasting is only possible with consistent, reliable data. The first step was the development of a data platform. Previously, information on patients, bed occupancy, triage, staffing and logistics was fragmented, incomplete or manually maintained in unstructured formats.

The new platform consolidates data from various systems, defines it uniformly and makes it centrally accessible—while complying with regulatory requirements. This creates a single source of truth for the entire hospital.

Technical and practical

The dashboard was developed in collaboration with users—from clinical staff to managers. Their input ensured the use of consistent, reliable data and formed the basis for the interface design.

As a result, the user screens are intuitive, logical and fast to use—for nurses, specialists, support staff and administrators alike. The dashboard also meets current information needs across different levels and scenarios. Hospital data is now optimally accessible, secure and practically usable.

The platform enables faster reporting, more consistent decision-making and forms the technological foundation for further applications, such as predictive models. It is a key enabler of future healthcare innovations.

Prediction platform

Building on the data platform, Zuyderland developed one of its most important predictive models: the ED prediction platform. This allows the hospital to forecast patient inflow at the ED with high reliability—around 90% accuracy. The model accounts for factors such as seasonality, day of the week, weather conditions and public holidays.

Forecasts are broken down by location, specialty and triage code. This enables targeted planning, both short- and medium-term. The department knows in advance how many patients are likely to arrive, their expected condition and where they will be admitted.

First time right

This allows Zuyderland to align staffing and resource planning with expected demand weeks in advance. Bed capacity, for example, can be anticipated more accurately.

Strategic decisions—such as hiring temporary staff—can also be better substantiated. It’s the first time right principle in action: executing processes correctly from the start and avoiding rework or corrections.

The result is less reactive decision-making and more stability within the organisation. The prediction model has now been in use for four years, and temporary staffing at the ED has decreased by 3 to 5%.

Patient flow

The prediction platform also proves valuable for clinical departments. By forecasting patient flow from the ED, departments can prepare accordingly.

They can anticipate peak demand by scheduling extra nurses or planning earlier discharge rounds. This application provides insights up to three months in advance with 80% accuracy. It also factors in care intensity, allowing staffing to be matched even more precisely to patient needs.

The combination of data and prediction platforms has led to measurable improvements at Zuyderland. The hospital saves time and costs, patient care and experience improve, and staff satisfaction increases. The approach also reduces waste and ensures more efficient use of capacity. What was once based on experience and gut feeling is now driven by factual data and insights from a wide range of parameters.
